NOTES
In the culture of the day, no father could be as dishonored as the father was in this story.
[Your Response Here]
The standards of Jewish culture said the younger son should try to earn his way back into the family through self-abasement as a hired hand for the rest of his life. He should pay restitution.
[Your Response Here]
The father saw the son a long way off because he was looking for him. In the same way, God is looking for the sinner. He is not reluctant when He sees the penitent coming back to Him.
[Your Response Here]
The father had to hike up his robe to run to meet his son, which in that day was considered a shameful act. The father was willing to bear shame to be reconciled with his wayward son.
[Your Response Here]
In the parable, the robe was a symbol of dignity and honor; sandals were a sign of sonship (because slaves went barefoot); and the ring was a sign of authority.
[Your Response Here]
The younger sonâs unearned restoration would have been shocking to the Pharisees.
[Your Response Here]
Jesus is God who came down from glory, humbled Himself, ran through the dusty streets of our world, and took our shame in order to embrace us and make us His sons (and daughters).
[Your Response Here]
God receives sinners for His own joy.
